But I saw this in [livejournal.com profile] p1kap1ka's journal and thought it'd be amusing. It was.

On the twelfth day of Christmas, ariadne3 sent to me...
Twelve corvideyes drumming
Eleven meowses piping
Ten ctseawas a-leaping
Nine shiningmoons biking
Eight kareinas a-reading
Seven sidhefires a-teaching
Six clemtaurs a-knitting
Five aelfgyfu-u-u-us
Four tattoos
Three chickens
Two eccentricities
...and a sca in a hrothgar1.
Get your own Twelve Days:

And really, only two eccentricities? I think not.

I'm PRETTY sure t This is an animation, but it took a couple of close looks before I was sure. Bill and I decided that the best thing about it is that it could, conceivably, be built.

That and it's super fascinating to watch, over and over. Not that I'd know anything about that.

I think it starts automatically, so here's a cut tag. )

[livejournal.com profile] cerulean_fleur pointed out to me that there are more. Here are links to the three I thought were the niftiest, after this one here, which I still think is the best of all of them.

Pogo Sticks

Gyro Drums

Pipe Dream

(Edited after communicating with [livejournal.com profile] cerulean_fleur via evil, evil StumbleUpon, which makes homework doing either impossible or more entertaining, your call.)

Aside to [livejournal.com profile] memegarden, I don't know if these have too many visual cutaways for your cutie kiddo to watch, I suspect that most of them do, but I thought of her when I was watching the Pogo Sticks.

I was looking through [livejournal.com profile] vesta_aurelia's friends page (lookin' idly for folks I know, 'cause Livejournal is the crack,) and I found this, I don't even remember whose post it was in, but it looked nifty.

Your rainbow is intensely shaded brown, orange, and violet.

What is says about you: You are a strong person. You appreciate the roughness of nature. You feel closer to people when you understand their imperfections. You are patient and will keep trying to understand something until you've mastered it.

Find the colors of your rainbow at spacefem.com.

That's pretty good. Though I've been a little short of patience lately, I think it's just due to all of the things that I've been trying to figure out for school and life-organization stuff, too.

With that, it's 2:00 in the morning. What am I still doing in front of the computer? Good night morning!

engrish, trash, can, sign, fruit-leather-suitcase
more the engrish!

I wonder if fruit leather suitcases would make it through airport security? They'd be great; biodegradable, already mysteriously sticky, easy to store...

Would the wheels on the roller models be made of those impossibly hard bran cookies?

Now, what puzzles me is whether this is a suitcase dispenser, or if this is where you put them for easy disposal? (Why wouldn't you just feed them to your toddler/dog/chicken/doggychicken?)

Hmmm...

Your result for Howard Gardner's Eight Types of Intelligence Test...

Spatial

31% Logical, 47% Spatial, 22% Linguistic, 29% Intrapersonal, 6% Interpersonal, 18% Musical, 37% Bodily-Kinesthetic and 47% Naturalistic!

"This area has to do with vision and spatial judgment. People with strong visual-spatial intelligence are typically very good at visualizing and mentally manipulating objects. They have a strong visual memory and are often artistically inclined. Those with visual-spatial intelligence also generally have a very good sense of direction and may also have very good hand-eye coordination, although this is normally seen as a characteristic of the bodily-kinesthetic intelligence.

Careers which suit those with this intelligence include artists, engineers, and architects." (Wikipedia)

I'm actually a little surprised. I figured linguistic would be stronger, go figure.

All right, one more of these.

Word Play

[livejournal.com profile] memegarden posted a link to Wordle which is a nifty fun little toy that takes text you give it and makes it into pretty text pictures. I think I've sufficiently wasted enough time playing with it. For the record, I finished the lesson plan assignment before entering it in; that was my deal with myself. I'm having to be very firm with myself about my computer play time.

* Grab the nearest book.
* Open the book to page 56.
* Find the fifth sentence.
* Post the text of the sentence in your journal along with these instructions.
* Don't dig for your favorite book, the cool book, or the intellectual one: pick the CLOSEST.

So, Sean Williams (the ethnomusicologist faculty at Evergreen, now I'm really sorry I never took a class with her,) came to do a short unit on music, how to teach it and how to use it to cement classroom community, as well as a quick mini-rundown of a slice of Indonesian culture. She brought her Angklung and dogdog (vowels same as in Spanish,) and had the class learn one of the traditional fertility songs. It was SUPER fun. She explained to us that the place where she had lived had people who were so tuned to musical jokes (there are many in a town angklung performance; it's all about sex, and makin' stuff grow, you know,) that they would bring popular music riffs into it, and occasionally break out into pop songs.
I was curious about whether I could find anything on trusty ol' youtube. This is kind of brain hurting, but I like it.

Mission what? )

(reposted from my school blog)

I went to see/listen to Ursula K. Le Guin read some chapters from her book A Wizard of Earthsea this evening. I have to admit that when I learned that she was going to be reading in town I went all squealy and fangirl in the middle of the Bookstore. It was mildly embarrassing, but she’s my favorite author, so it’s understandable.
She didn’t read some of my favorite bits, but did choose three chapters that showed the flow of the story without giving away the end, which may not be surprising to some even if they have not read it, but it is such a satisfying ending.

I wanted to ask her about whether she has any of her social setups or societies (i.e. the androgynes on Karhide or the four-person “sedoretu” marriage from O) that she has thought of but not yet written about. I didn’t, but that’s okay. I left her a little note promising that I would send photos of the Mud Run and gushing all over the place thanking her for coming to read. The line was super long; I gave the note to one of “the keepers” as she called them. I didn’t want to waste anyone’s time, I didn’t want anything signed, all I wanted to do was chat with her but it really wasn’t the time or place.

When you see this, post in your own journal with your favorite quote from The Princess Bride. Preferably not "As you wish" or the Inigo Montoya speech.

So, I got orthodontic braces (again) yesterday. I had them between the ages of 12-14. My teeth have shifted, and they've been getting pretty uncomfortable. I know this will make my mouth feel much better in the long run, but today it really hurts. I'd pout, but that hurs, too. (whiiiiine)

Okay, so Andrew's mom calls to give me updates from time to time, and I thought I'd share this one with y'all.
He's getting reading glasses, which he's excited about, and they're trying some new things to help him to not transpose and flip his letters, which is great.
He's doing fantastically well in school, all A's and B's, except for in Missouri history.
You say, well, that's not surprising, he just moved there! At least, that's what I said. His mom said that was only part of it...
An example of the history test:

Test question: Name a contribution made by Europeans to the Indians.

Andrew's answer: Smallpox

Good boy.
I laughed for a solid 15 minutes, told Bill, called Beth, who says "well, it sounds like he knows his Missouri history quite well, actually!"
I'm so proud.
