Shakespearian Play Meme

Not sure how I feel about this...
(swiped from [livejournal.com profile] aelfgyfu's page.)

Your result for The Which Shakespeare Play Are You? Test...

Macbeth

You scored 49% = Tragic, 34% = Comic, 30% = Romantic, 40% = Historic

You are Macbeth! A supposed retelling of the true story of King Macbeth of Scotland, Macbeth is one of Shakespeare's bloodiest plays. Macbeth, after hearing the prophesy of three witches, believes he will be named king of Scotland. However, this line of thinking eventually leads Macbeth down a horrible road of blood and death as he fights first to gain, and then to keep hold of the crown. Believing the play to be cursed, many actors will not even say the name of the play inside of a theater unless it is being performed and refer to it simply as "The Scottish Play". But you probably don't care about some stupid old curse. As Macbeth you most likely don't take warnings too well and you are so headstrong that you can't take good advice when it comes your way, even if it is for your own good. But being Macbeth isn't all bad. You are most likely a man (or woman) of action. People probably like you because you are good at thinking on your feet and making quick decisions. But be careful, as your rash behavior may also get you in to trouble along the way.

Candy

I made candied pomelo peel today. :D

It's easy. First you wrestle the gigantic citrus open, with much swearing.
Then you scrape off the majority of the pith from the peel, and slice it into pinky-width sticks or smaller, hopefully with minimal swearing.
Put the peel pieces into a saucepan and cover with water. The cookbook I looked in when I first made these said to boil them 2-3 times to draw off the volatile oils. I only boil them once, because I like those oils.
Drain.
Dump liberal amounts of sugar over the peel, pretty much coat it in a thick layer. Put in just enough water to get all the sugar wet.
Cook over a medium heat, stirring constantly. It is very important to attend it at all times, because we wouldn't want a repeat of the Sekanjabin Incident*, now would we?
Eyeball it, add more sugar.
Keep stirring, the peels really will suck up all or almost all of the sugar.
Place on a cookie sheet on waxed paper to dry.

(*Electric stoves should absolutely not resemble gas ranges.)

On an unrelated note, I had my mid-quarter conference with one of my professors today. I have mixed feelings. : /

I realized that certain cephalopod aficionados might also appreciate this. For that matter, you might also appreciate that group!

Tarot meme

You are The Wheel of Fortune

Good fortune and happiness but sometimes a species of
intoxication with success

The Wheel of Fortune is all about big things, luck, change, fortune. Almost always good fortune. You are lucky in all things that you do and happy with the things that come to you. Be careful that success does not go to your head however. Sometimes luck can change.

What Tarot Card are You?
Take the Test to Find Out.

This fits with how I've been feeling about the Master's program, in particular.

Happy Birdyday times several!

To [livejournal.com profile] corvideye and our mutual friend Angela who shares her birthday! (Happy early birthday to [livejournal.com profile] grian_ruadh as well!)

May the coming year be only as exciting as you would like it to be.

Also, you get one hell of a great inaugural birthday gift, I think.

Requiem for a rooster

The big rooster (commonly known as "Mr. Rooster") has bit the big one. This guy survived freezing weather, a big dog carrying him home by his butt, and countless other indignities experienced by chickens who live long enough.

I went out to feed them this morning, and there was a BIG hole in the A frame chicken tractor, lined with feathers. Hm...quick count, 7 hens, no rooster. I went to get Bill, who looked for tracks, found the carcass. He thinks weasel or raccoon. We set the trap tonight, baited with lamb fat probably.

I'm bummed, he was my favorite rooster. I think he was getting up near 4 or 5 years old. Venerable bird! The other big bummer is that this means that we'll need to get another straight run of birds rather than letting the current hens sit, because the other rooster is from the same brood as all of the hens. Damn.

Snow!

It's pretty outside, and I'm inside with warm tea. :)

Cathy made banana bread, of which I had several slices for breakfast...or lunch, 'cause I slept in disgustingly late.

I heard one of the chickens making an egg just before I got out of bed. Silly birds, don't you know it's cold and dark?

I finished a pair of socks on Friday, I'm waiting a little impatiently for them to dry. I'm wearing two pair I made right now, one knee high and one ankle high pair. With the silk long-johns I'm feeling very cozy.

I started making a pair of gloves for Bill, like these that I made for Josh and Marie, but without the ring motif, of course. (I don't know if you can see them if you're not on Ravelry, if not I'll put the picture in another LJ post.) Bill's will be a kind of oatmeal/burlap color. I like the Knit Picks Telemark yarn for these gloves, it's really springy and tough without being too harsh to wear.

I finished organizing my yarn stash yesterday, it took all day. I still need to do my book reorganization and deal with the drifts of paper from fall quarter, but I do have a sense of accomplishment about the yarn stash. I wrote down everything I have as I put it away, so I've been putting that into the Ravelry database in an attempt to keep track of what I've got for various projects. For instance, I think I have enough of the hemp/wool blend to make a very nice stripy vest, and I'd almost completely forgotten about that yarn's existence.

Sigh of relief

Well, except for my faculty evaluation, (quick explanation: Evergreen doesn't do grades, students get evaluations written about them by the faculty, as well as about them by them. This time I'm getting my portfolio reviewed so I can advance to Master's candidacy. Faculty also get evaluations written about them by the students, which I still need to do,) I have all of my work done for the quarter. It feels GOOD.

Today I'm going to go through my yarn stash and move some books around; I'll also get my school paperwork in order so I'm ready for next quarter.

For your amusement, as it was for mine: The Mensa Invitational Works of Literary Genius

pffffffffffffffffffffffftttttttttttttttttt****!

In 2008, ariadne3 resolves to...
Drink four glasses of sca every day.
Start an art fund.
Go to the chickens every month.
Connect with my inner ocf.
Find a new beer.
Buy new eccentricities.
Get your own New Year's Resolutions:

I tried the 12 days meme again to see if I'd get anything new, 'cause [livejournal.com profile] corvideye's was way cooler than mine, and noticed the link for new year's resolutions at the bottom.
I'm satisfied. This is GREAT. It's a good thing I wasn't drinking any SCA at the time, or it would certainly be all over my computer, and we don't need that again, now do we?

Though, I think the chickens would object if they were only gone to once a month. They get hungry. They'd let themselves out. I wouldn't have any kale left.

I wonder if I could knit new eccentricities? I could certainly try.
